How to Scan a QR Code on Any Device (2026 Guide)
QR codes are everywhere — on menus, posters, packaging and payment terminals. The good news is that scanning one no longer requires a dedicated app. Here is how to scan a QR code on every major device, plus what to do when you only have a screenshot.
Scan with an iPhone or iPad
Open the built-in Camera app and point it at the QR code. Hold steady until a yellow notification banner appears, then tap it to open the link.
If nothing happens, go to Settings, Camera, and make sure "Scan QR Codes" is enabled. You can also use the QR code button in Control Center.
Scan on Android
Most modern Android phones detect QR codes directly in the camera app. Open Camera, aim at the code, and tap the link that appears.
On older phones, use Google Lens (often built into the camera or the Google app) to scan and open the code.
Scan a QR code from an image or screenshot
When the QR code is already on your screen — for example in an email or a saved photo — you cannot point your camera at it. Instead, upload the image to a browser-based scanner.
With ScannerQR you can drag-and-drop the image, paste it from your clipboard, or pick it from your files. Decoding happens locally in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.
Scan on Windows or Mac
Desktops rarely have a QR scanner built in. The simplest approach is to take a screenshot of the code and upload it to an online scanner, or use your phone to scan the screen directly.

- Do I need an app to scan QR codes?
- No. iPhone and most Android cameras scan natively, and any device with a browser can use an online scanner.
