How to Scan a PDF417 code From a camera on iPad

A private, browser-based workflow for Safari, Photos and the iPad camera.

This workflow is designed for stacked codes on tickets, documents and identification cards contained in a live phone, tablet or webcam feed. Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the scanner and select the input option that matches a camera.
  2. Provide a live phone, tablet or webcam feed. Hold the device steady in even light.
  3. Wait for the browser to detect the PDF417 code. Keep the long rectangular code level and in focus.
  4. Read the decoded result first. Only open links or save details when the content matches what you expected.

Settings that work best on iPad

ScannerQR works with Safari, Photos and the iPad camera. Use Split View when the code is shown in another app. For uploaded files, prefer the original image over a version forwarded through a messaging app because messaging services often reduce resolution and contrast.

If the code is printed, use soft, even lighting and hold the camera parallel to the surface. If it is displayed on another screen, reduce reflections and make the code large enough that its individual modules remain distinct.

What to do when the code is not detected

Start by cropping excess background while leaving a clear margin around the symbol. Increase contrast, avoid digital zoom, and try a sharper source file. A damaged code may still decode when its finder patterns and enough error-correction data remain intact.

For a live camera scan, grant browser camera permission and try the rear camera on a phone or tablet. For a saved code, switch to the image or screenshot workflow rather than pointing the same device at its own display.

Privacy and result safety
